An upcoming event at the end of this school year is Relay for Life. This is a yearly event to raise money for the America Cancer Society. This year’s event is from May 8th to May 9th at the Dunlap High School. It is a total of about twelve hours long overnight and teams volunteer to walk around a track and raise money.
As it states on the Relay for Life website, the three main ideas of the event are to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back. At the beginning of the event there is a survivor lap. Those that have been directly affected are able to celebrate what they have been able to overcome. Later in the evening, luminarias are lit to remember those that have been lost to cancer. This is a very emotional part of the night as the participants honor their family and friends that have passed.
The entire purpose of this event is to Fight Back. This is an inspiring event for everyone involved. It helps spread awareness and raise money to help cure cancer.
Throughout the night, one member of your team must be walking around the track. The whole point is to walk continuously and fight for a cure. This may not seem like the most enjoyable activity, but there are many other forms of entertainment. There are games for teams to face off against each other and other activities to keep everyone busy. At last year’s event at Dunlap High School we played volleyball against other teams, faced off in challenging mini-games, and there was even a huge scavenger hunt.
If you aren’t involved in raising money with a team, you can still do your part by donating to the cause. It is a fun competition among teams to raise the most money so help out your favorite team.
Aside from the main event there are many opportunities to help teams raise money. Key Club is in charge of the whole event here at Dunlap High School, and they have multiple chances allowing you to contribute. There is a bowling event, Culver’s night, and other activities both at and outside of the high school in order to raise money.
If you get the chance to take part in Relay for Life, I highly recommend it. Even if you don’t join the event you can still support the American Cancer Society through donations. This can be a very inspirational experience and you will be benefitting a wonderful cause.
